چکیده

This paper proposes a force-based design method for force-limiting deformable connections that are used to transfer seismic-induced horizontal forces from the floor diaphragms in buildings vertical elements of lateral seismic force–resisting systems with base flexural mechanisms (e.g., reinforced concrete shear walls). The determines limiting at each building. which transition linear-elastic post-elastic response. Design examples presented. Seismic responses numerical simulations 12-, 8-, and 4-story wall example show proposed enables effective preliminary connections. It is shown designed have relatively uniform distribution connection deformation demands over building height. also their force acceleration reduced magnitude variability compared conventional exhibit large responses.

Earthquake Resistant Design of Reinforced Concrete Buildings

This paper briefly reviews the development of earthquake resistant design of buildings. The state-of-the-art of seismic design is discussed from the viewpoint of the performance criteria of buildings. These are (a) serviceability from frequent minor-intensity earthquake motions, (b) repairability from an infrequent but major-intensity earthquake motion, and (c) life safety from the maximum poss...

A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF OPTIMUM AND IRANIAN SEISMIC DESIGN FORCE DISTRIBUTIONS FOR STEEL MOMENT RESISTING BUILDINGS

In this study, constant-ductility optimization algorithm under a family of earthquake ground motions is utilized to achieve uniform damage distribution over the height of steel moment resisting frames (SMRFs). SMRF structures with stiffness-degrading hysteric behavior are modeled as single-bay generic frame in which the plastic hinge is confined only at the beam ends and the bottom of the first...

Architectural Glass for Earthquake - resistant Buildings

Significant differences exist in the performance of various architectural glass types subjected to simulated earthquake conditions. Controlled laboratory studies were conducted to investigate the cracking resistance and fallout resistance of different types of architectural glass installed in the same storefront and mid-rise wall systems. Quantitative data obtained from these studies are summar...

Smoothness-based forces for deformable models: a long-range force and a corner fitting force

Deformable models, originally proposed by Terzopoulos et al. (Artif. Intell. 36 (1988) 91) and Kass et al. (Int. J. Comput. Vision 1 (1988) 321) in 1988, have been widely used in medical image segmentation. However, they manifest two well-known limitations: the lack of an appropriate long-range force to drive the model surface towards the object boundary and poor performance at high curvature b...

New Lateral Force Distribution for Seismic Design of Structures Based on Seismic Demand Ratio

The design of earthquake-resistant buildings starts with defining the maximum lateral earthquake forces or their resultant. The amount of these forces depends on various factors, including coefficient of system behavior which depends on overstrength and its ductility. In this study, a method is presented for designing an earthquake-resistant system in which the distribution of lateral forces is...
